We had a couple of mini vans and a Corolla in our group and they all made it without damage in the beginning of July 2020. The first few miles of the road was very well maintained. We had to move pretty slow for the rest. A lot of it depends on picking a smooth path and how much others have torn up the road the last time it got wet. I've also had the opposite experience. I had a boat (grandpa car) with a 4.5 quart oil pan that was reduced to 4 qt when I hit a big bump/rock (which was a blessing really, I mean who makes a 4.5 qt oil pan? What a waste of half a quart!). But my brother who was a little more aggressive and picked a worse path caused damage to his transmission and needed a tow to get out. So use caution. Stop when you don't feel comfortable anymore and walk the rest of the way.
The last couple miles is really rough - definitely SUV/4-Wheel Drive appropriate.
You could definitely hike there, but it's about five miles from the paved road. So unless you want a long hike I would probably try to find a car that can make the drive.
