Why anyone would fire you because you're a Veteran is totally out of anything I've heard of! Get a lawyer and you could make a very large sum of money, without a doubt!!! Unless there were circumstances leading to your dismissal, like theft or sexual harassment.
Hire a lawyer tell the truth, what happened, find another job till its settled. But seek damages for your lose.
You do your homework on your rights, talk to a lawyer, and see if they rightfully fires you or not. If not... take them to court. If so... cut your losses, learn from your mistakes, and move on.
Save your money. Iowa is an "at will" state, meaning they don't need a good reason or just cause to terminate your employment.
