Back packs are allowed. I took water in with me on last visit. They are subject to search. But I think they are allowed.

Coolers are only allowed in picnic areas, we took a bookbag with water, tea, and some snacks and had no issues

Bring a backpack because this place is huge.
We take in a backpack cooler filled with water every time. That is what I would suggest.
You can have coolers in the picnic areas outside of the park. I've always brought my own water, along with e,tra bottles and snacks without problem.
RV are allowed in the parking lot. Look for specially marked spots. You are allowed to leave the park and re- enter. We always try to park close to trees and have picnic in parking lot, rest then go back in. The zoo is huge.
Backpacks are allowed.
