We walked in, said no res.. she looked us up and down, then looked to a man that seemed to be her boss, he looked at us, looked at her, then said no. She then looked at us and said we only have seating at the bar.. we could literally see the judgement and decided to leave.
This has never happened to me. However, it is possible there was a special event booked for the restaurant section- like a rehearsal dinner or something. That's pretty common in the square.
Hard to say generically. But, they easily could have reservations for all the open tables later in the evening. It certainly wouldn't be fair to give someone walking in a table that resulted in making someone with a reservation later wait.
