Take your time. Linger in front of the art rather than just trying to get through. Be sure to walk in the surrounding grounds outside. Eat at the cafe - it is beautiful and quite reasonably priced. Bring a device as a free app and free Wi-Fi can help explain some of the pieces.
Take the time to read the information next to each exhibit. Also read the rules prior to browsing. Some are just common courtesy like no camera flash or speaking above a whisper. Another thing is that just because entry is free it does not mean you shouldn't show some appreciation by dropping a donation in the box.
Planning multiple trips (if you can) is a good idea. We spent half a day and saw a single wing. Same thing when I went to the Louvre. Spent an entire day there and saw maybe 10%.
Thank you
Exhibits are great, I took photos but no Flash ... It's all about the Art. Knowing that, it's a place to go back to time & time again.
There are so many things to see, I have been to the national gallery in DC, it does not have much over the nelson, they may say three examples of an artist's work where as we have one or two, but the quality is great. Be sure to eat at the rosellii court, nothing like dining in a 2 story renaissance court, complete with fountain and the food is good and reasonable, highly romantic at night with candles
