William Nelson was a newspaper publisher and Mary Atkins was a school teacher and widow of a prominent real estate magnate. Both left land and /or money to be used for the arts. There used to be two separate museums but they were combined in the eighties.
The museum is named after William Nelson publisher of the Kansas City Star Newspaper and Mary Atkins a wealthy school teacher.
