You may be allowed to self guide on a section 3 trip along side other guided rafts and within the trip. You can also rent a raft for section 3 and do your own trip. Guides are required for section 4 trips when going through the local outfitters but anyone can float section 4 on their own private trip with their own gear. Doing so is not advisable if you don't have the skills or knowledge of the run. Also, having at least another boat on your private trip is highly recommended though no longer required.
Guides are required. It is too challenging without a guide but it is worth it. If you want unguided rafts, try NOC in NC on the Nantahala.
