I have always wondered why they had that in the middle thought it was just a divider but now I am going to find out when they took the pool out it looked really nice with it in there from the pictures I seen.
The reflecting pool was filled in around 1951, and renovations have continued since. The memorial had deteriorated to a disgraceful state that prompted drastic ongoing improvements.
I'm really not sure. I don't remember one being there when I went as a kid. But between then and my most recent visit, there's been a lot of years. My memory could be really bad.
