I just went to drop plates on Friday. The lady came outside took them in and brought me receipt of the transaction showing the date i recieved the plates and the date i turned them in. No appointment needed

You don't need an appointment. You can drop plates in a box that they have for plates. They have a box at the DMV in Rahway.

Drop off of plates do not require any appointment. The least time is 5 minutes!
