If I'm not mistaken you can transport a firearm into Cali as long as both ammo and the firearm are locked and separated.
Why store it out of your posession? I personally would look into California law. If you have it disassembled and separated from cab to trunk, just keep it in your vehicle. (If you have a vehicle in California with you) just an opinion.
