Could be the time you went, I find it hit or miss depending on the crowd. They seem to get very flustered when crowded.
Perhaps a new employee? I recommend that you stop in and voice your opinion. Done correctly it could benefit many.

It shouldn't matter what time someone goes to eat. It should be on point each and every time. Yes, I understand it gets busy and employees get flustered, but still need to dish out the same on matter what time.

i miss the days when there was a piano and conga in the back to jam on, but the bagels have always been great.
Nothing happened, maybe you went in a bad day. We've never had a problem, still our favorite spot.
