It's a little steep right at the beginning, but don't let that scare you. It is a much more gradual climb after the first short hill. It's about 6 and 3/4 miles and 1000 feet of elevation climb round trip to the rock and back. There is an observation point above the rock that is much safer than crawling around the cliff top. And as the other local guide stated - excellent views. The formation's original name is "white rock", or "big white rock". Elephant rock is actually a formation (that looks like an elephant) on the opposite side of the canyon that is visible from white rock. At some point, the two were mislabeled on a map and has since been perpetuated as elephant rock. This is why you see different names on different maps.
It is a great walk. On some maps it is listed as WHITE ROCK l think it should be named WAYNE'S rock, after a boy who fell from it. The trail is actually a loop, hikers can begin at Muller Park, and hike to Wayne's rock, going past to Rudy's Flat, the decend through North Canyon. Walking through the golf course, back to your start, or park a second car in North Canyon. EXCELLENT views!!!!!
There are some bridges that cross over some streams, but no water falls. It's a pretty gradual hike, and not too steep at all
