Even small independent theatres charge big bucks for concessions. As others have mentioned, you can't make money on tickets, at least during the first three weeks of a release. Most studios collect 70% or more of each ticket. Disney charges north of 90% on the Blockbuster films (Star Wars, Marvel franchise films etc).

When I was a mgr at a local theater the profits from tickets paid for the electric bill and heat/ac. Concessions Paid for all wages, repairs and upgrades, building rent etc. Most months there was not much left
