I bought my ticket at the gate. I called and she said try your luck and see if we are at capacity yet. So I did and I got right in and rode the train too!

It mainly depends on what time of day it is and whether they have schools bring children in for tours. Since we're in summertime now you should be able to avoid the large bus loads and be able to buy at the gate and get in.
