Hi Lisa, this is a great question! The rock, which is part of a broken Dakota sandstone boulder, was found Northwest of Lindsborg in 1980 when it was displaced by construction workers who were laying a fuel pipeline through the area. It appeared to have petroglyphs carved on it. Since it was already displaced by the construction, it was brought here to the museum. The Kansas State Historical Society examined it but could not determine exactly what the petroglyph carvings were, since the rock was already very old and weathered. It is my understanding that there were several incidents of vandalism, so the rock was enclosed in the fence to secure it from further issues. I hope this helps. Thank you for your question! They put it in a fence because people were painting it, vandalizing it
