Dogs must be on leash. But the atmosphere feels fairly relaxed about dogs being leashed. As long as your dog is behaved and has a good retrieval call you should be a good to go. Use your common sense and if you see somebody approaching or coming up behind you quickly it's best to leash your dog. Assess the situation and then proceed with caution.

Many trails are active horse trails so dogs must be leashed so as not to spook the horses. Several trails pass through farmland with cows, turkeys - unleashed dogs will spook them. Lastly, coyotes are known to be in the area and black bears have been sighted recently. Rockwood Park is next door (on the Hudson) - it's more dog friendly.
