Mud Island is a nickname.

If you are planning to visit after a good rain you will learn why it is called mud island. About 1/3 of the inside of the fort becomes a swamp. Call ahead and ask the conditions if you would like full access to all buildings without soaking yourself ankle deep.

Hog Island was where the airport is now. Mud island was where the fort is now.
