We've never had to park more than 1 block away. Street parking.
I've almost always been able to park in a non-metered space 1 block away(only one instance, was it 2 blocks) and walk back there, each time I drove up there. For those trips when I didn't take public transit, there.

I'd say you can usually find metered parking on that stretch of Chicago Ave. in Evanston, and the rate in Evanston is far more reasonable than in Chicago!
