Perfectly safe. No one is allowed in the concourse without a boarding pass. Even the outer parts of the airport, smoking and pet areas, are heavily patrolled, and I've never seen the slightest crime (except for smoking outside the designated smoking area or having 6oz bottles in the carryon) in probably a couple hundred hours of sitting and sleeping in CMH at all hours. The same for other airports, even ATL, DTW which are in terrible areas. I doubt any criminal is going to try for any place so full of security, restricted access, etc.
It is safe, but unless you have an overnight layover in the airport usually people wait until 2 hours before their flight leaves
