...and, longest footpath promoted by volunteers and maintained in the world
A trail that runs from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. It follows the Appalachian mountain range. 2190 miles long, goes thru 14 different states.
It is a hiking trail. Hundreds of people have hiked it from end to end which takes from 3 to 5 months to finish depending on the individual. It is extremely well marked and maintained by several clubs. There are primitive open shelters nearly every 10 miles or less. Most through hikers start from Springer Mountain Georgia in early April. A few more adventurous began in Maine but usually wait till May. The trail is not easy all the way thru but there are sections that can be hiked by most everyone. It also is not necessarily a hike you will be lonely on. Gets very busy in some section. I suggest using Google and Facebook to research it. There are many videos that will inform and give you great tips on planning your own hike. It is sometimes hard but also a really great fun. Finishing it from end to end is an amazing feeling of accomplishment. It will change you.
