Library cards are free for Irving residents. You can sign up for a card online or come to one of the branches and bring your photo ID with current address. If your photo ID doesn't have your current address, bring it along with a utility bill, phone bill or piece of mail that shows your current address.
You can borrow from the library even if you are not an Irving resident if you have the TexShare card. This card is also free but you need to be in good standing with your local library.
