Is it possible to get past the gate as a civilian to just take pictures of the beautiful building façade? Those planes are really cool from the pictures people have posted.

No, cameras aren't allowed on the property and neither is taking photos with your cellphone. This is a miltary government site. I used to work at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics.

I have only been there as a contractor and had to arrange the proper credentials. Even then, you are issued a booklet telling you that pictures of the facilities are prohibited. While inside, I have seen groups on tour that were probably new interns on a carefully guided tour and pictures are again prohibited. Believe me, you don't want to meet their security personnel under the wrong circumstances.

Absolutely not. And dont try to sneak through either or security will not only pick you up but record your name/license and escort you off the premises. You can schedule a tour as a civilian but even then, no cameras or pictures are allowed on the premises or again you will be escorted by security and charges may be pressed against you because this is a US defense facility
