16?? That is ridiculous. These high school children shluld not be allowed to do anything with these animals considering the fact that they have NO DEGREE in wildlife biology, animal behavior or zoology. This is a career not a petting zoo!!
To Anonymous: The volunteers do not "do anything" with the cats. Volunteers, especially minors and those just starting out, help with keeping the facilities clean and orderly, which does not require a degree. We're talking about sweeping, picking up feces, cleaning cages, collecting and emptying garbage, moving heavy supplies, etc. It's not glamorous or exciting work, but it's a great opportunity to learn responsibilities, and learn about the cats. The full time staff and senior volunteers (usually 3+ years constant volunteer work at the facility) perform all the activities with the animals such as feeding or moving, and a full time vet is on staff. No one is ever in the same enclosure as a cat.
You have to be at least 16 years old.
