Yes, ensure you get all appropriate permits and schedule around the ferry. Furthermore ensure you have a self-recovery kit and know what you are doing. If you have never drove on the beach if recommend Corolla, NC first as it is much more traveled.

Yes, you can take your own vehicle across the ferry and use them to get around the island. You really need to have 4x4 or AWD if you're going to leave the cabin area

We took the short ferry to the lookout tower. There is a boardwalk to the lighthouse, and keeper's house. But the building was closed in October. The beach was warm and clean with some fishing from the dock.
