Fast pass is very convenient but when we were there the lines moved very fast. Yes get there early. You should be able to finish the entire park in 2 hours.
I don't work for them but with my experience with students & family members I would suggest getting there @ least 20 minutes before. This way you will be ahead of the crowd & he can enjoy the time spent.
