Make sure you ask for an attorney - the judge may not being it up, you have to ask for it yourself, then Anne's response is spot on. My understanding is if it is a violation against you they will appoint one, but if you're the plaintiff they won't. But step 1 - make sure you ask the Judge to appoint you an attorney.
They should ask you your income in court. If it is below the legal side requirement income, the judge will grant it for you. I believe t gets determined at your first court date.
