Gordon is actually incorrect. As an apprentice they do provide a hotel while you attend class for anyone over I believe 50 miles away. They also pay for milage and 20$ a day while in class.
If you are thinking about being in the carpenters union you would need to be able to pass something called a tabe test. This determines your level of basic math and reading. They do not provide housing because they aren't a shelter for the homeless. They act as a job referral/ placement agency that provides you with the proper carpentry training/ education needed to efficiently do your job when placed on a job site. You start off as an apprentice and as you've advanced in your skill education and on the job training, you eventually become a licenced carpenter.
As Ms Gordon stated, the program is an education and on the job training program. You work for the Contractors that have signed an agreement with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. The Apprenticeships last either 3 or 4 years. At the finish you become a Journeyman Carpenter.
