I'm sorry you had a bad experience. That is not the norm for Krispy Kreme. The hot sign was probably still on because they forgot to turn it off. As for the bad doughnuts, I don't have an answer. Could be that your kids were sick with something else or just a bad batch. Either way, you should complain to the manager. I hope your kids feel better and that this never happens again to you or anyone.
Only the regular glazed donuts are fresh when the light is on.
