I would think it is risky to wait for the night of the performance unless it is a weeknight and not during the holiday vacation week. Regarding timing, I would go 1-2 hrs before performance time.
You can try rush tickets on day of performance at the box office, 1 hr before show, but the odds are tiny. If I were you, I'll go online and just buy them there.
