When Stephen F. Austin journeyed to Texas to establish a colony, he carried a Spanish map. Near what is now the Houston area, the map showed a “Rio Cibolo” - “cibolo” being the word Spanish explorers used for buffalo. When Austin had the map translated into English, the waterway was labeled “Buffalo Bayou.”
