My passport expired last year. Do I need to apply for a new one or can I renew? I will use the passport as identification for air travel but not to leave the country.

You can renew your passport with a Ds82 form. Current processing times are 4 to 6 weeks routine, 2 to 3 expedited, up to same day based on urgent travel at the agency.
