You can set up a "My Social Security" account and change your direct deposit there. Much easier than calling, and change goes into effect quickly. Just go on ssa.gov and follow directions to set up account. Lots of things you can do there instead of going in person.

You need to call them and give them the new banking information. Or, make an appointment to go in and speak to them in person about the changes.
