When I went, which was June 30th, you did not need to make an appointment. They open at 8:30am, I got there about 7:45am and I was about the 30th in line. When they opened, the line went quickly because they turned a bunch of people away for not having all the required paperwork. Make sure before you go that you have all the required paperwork. Such as Birth Certificate or US Passport. Social Security Card, State Picture ID and Two forms of proof of residence. It could be a bank statement or cable bill or any type of legitimate paperwork showing where you live. Bring as many as you can and you should have no problem. Also, a good idea is to bring a camping chair if you want to to go early and get out quick.
