we purchased 5 tickets for the mary poppins showing christmas day and viewing experience was terrible. there was something wrong with projector or the digital file as the image was very dark and cloudy looking. does the studio know about this?

I really don't know how to answer that, but you should've complained to management and have them either return your money or give you tickets to another showing when the problem was fixed

You could probably contact AMC and they'd give you a refund.
