I made a reservation, I was staying a whole week though. They did have open spots here and there throughout the week we were there.
No but it can help. Otherwise, first-come-first-serve. When we got there on Thursday, there were about 5-6 spots still available. Also, there are several other campgrounds nearby so if you can't get a site here, you can check out the other sites.
