You actually don't need a reservation. If you're bringing your car however it's better to make one so you know you will have a spot at the time you want to board. If you don't have a reservation you can be on standby. If you plan on just walking on, it's not necessary to have one. I recently brought my family and we just went and got tickets that day and ten minutes later we were on board. If you go during peak hours it may be a little busier.
