Kay Jay, If I were In your situation, I would have immediately questioned the Librarian who was assisting, to please check the status of the book and make sure that the book was placed under returned item.
Login to their website www.queenslibrary.org, and you can check the status of that book (If it is returned correctly, it shouldnt be under Checkouts)
