First Class are restored 1940's cars with individual seating, coach is more akin to a modern day commuter train car. All are decorated beautifully, so it is a matter of taste. I would say first class is a bit more comfortable for adult riders, I don't think chidren woukd know the difference. If you were traveling with a big group it may be easier to interact with each other in coach.

I did first class but if I were to do it again, I would go coach. They said 1st has bigger windows to see north pole better, which we passed kinda quickly, there were elves dancing and some lights. As the train approached the NP, they had all the kids from the farther side of the train go over to the side where the best view is, so no big deal. We each received mugs in first class.
