Works fine on my Nissan and Toyota.
Vapor lock is what causes that. I'm guessing that the brand new pumps have newer, more sensitive detection for the auto shut-off when full. Unfortunately this comes down to the design of the car model's tank, if that is indeed the cause. But I've heard filling with the pump nozzle inverted can prevent this, as it also rotates said sensors 180° to the top. Whether you can get it to stay like that while filling is a whole other question though... but it seems simple enough to test. I'd see it helps before trying to ghetto rig the pump to rest upsidedown!
Was it the same at all pumps?
