I went with a friend in the middle of the day on a Monday and there was only one other person on our tour. That was great to allow more opportunities for questions, etc. We bought at the museum with no issues. If you do wait to buy at the museum and find that you have to wait for the next tour, there are several Frank Lloyd Wright homes within a few block radius - as well as Unity Temple - that you can walk around and see.
Best buying in advance online: Max length of groups visiting is 20, and you may have to wait 40 mins to get in, in busy dates.
