They do take reservations, and it doesn't hurt to have them, bit they are not required.

They do accept reservations at Kyoto and I believe they are on Open Table, so you can book a reservation online. While you may not need on on a Thursday, itvisnt a bad idea to have one as it can get a little busy in there.
