Bears are common in wooded areas in NJ. And, can pose a danger if you're not prepared. Consider the example when a black bear killed a 22 year old college student via Apshawa reserve NJ in 2014. They hiked and were warned by others that a bear was spotted and to avoid the path. Instead, the students thought it would be cool to pursue it to take selfies with bear. Well, the bear killed one hiker while the rest ran away. The point is to understand bears can randomly appear in NJ woods when least expected and to know the right ways to respond (not by following them). Google what to do when encountering a bear. Having said all that, warning signs exist in round valley alerting hikers of potential bears. I've never encountered a bear at round valley when camping, but read stories of others spotting them. Avoid leaving foods out (biggest bear attractor). Place all foods in airtight container and hang it from tree with rope (many antibear products like this on Amazon). You will be fine.
Cycled and walk around lake many times, never encountered any wild life except pair beautiful bold eagles.
