So you and you grandson can go anytime and join a tour group. The tour itself is conducted with the group (and you need to be part of a tour to get in) and then once everything is concluded, you can wonder around on your own. So yes and no? You don't have to bring a ton of people, but you will join others visiting the site.
You can go just the two of you my husband and I went by ourselves and it was awesome
