Pretty much first come first served if it's your 1 time you pretty much jump the line

There's no need for an appointment. But getting there early helps things go faster. Try to avoid peak hours, typically afternoon when a majority of people get off work and donate.

Yea late morning early afternoon is best but even some evenings go rather quickly.
