I realize this is a late response, but as a heads-up: I found a stray that was in terrible shape. I took him to a vet to check for a chip (none), brought him back to health and decided to keep him. Three years later I was talking to an animal control officer (son of a co-worker) who informed me that it is against the law to simply keep/adopt a found stray. I'm assuming because dogs are considered property and no different than finding a wallet. He said I should have first taken him to an animal shelter, rescue or as a last resort, animal control. If no one came forward within the designated time frame (I believe 3 days), then I would have the opportunity to reclaim him. I mentioned it to my vet, who was completely unaware of this.
I just saw your question for the first time and it said it was from a 11 months ago, so I don't know that you still have the dog. But you can always try contacting Friends of the forlorn pitbull on Facebook and maybe they can point you in the right direction.
How long have you had him.It is a male dog right?
