I think you have to show ID at the box office for rated R films unless you look old enough

Yes. They will check ID. Unless you buy them online via fandango, or using the Kiosks located inside the theater.

If it's rated R then yes. Maybe buy tickets on Fandango and you won't have to provide ID when you walk in. I have never been asked for mine.
