We always stay on property. It's definitely worth the additional costs in my opinion. You get the additional Magic Hours, free magical express if you're flying, all day transport to and from the parks, and you get the complete "I'm going to Disney" feel. I would have to have no other option or be saving more than a few hundred dollars a night to give all that up.
They are booked. You must check back several times a day and hope someone cancels. Always book 180 days out. Restaurant and fast passes starting at 180 days in. There are some travel agents that might have rooms available as some travel companies buy lots in bulk, but most likely those are sold out this close to those times. I only book directly through Disney.
If your trying for the and of October and the first week of November, its fully booked because of the 10th anniversary of the wine and dine race. Many hotels are fully booked already for that time period including the all star music and movies resorts.

Definitely booked out! My recommendation would be to check back consistently and maybe modify the dates to more accommodating times like weekdays not just a weekend etc.
