Charles Lang Freer was an American industrialist, art collector, and patron, who gifted his collection of Asian and American art to the nation in 1906. The Freer Gallery subsequently opened in 1923 as the first art museum on the Smithsonian campus.

My relative. Descendant of Hugo Freer of New Paltz, NY. Charles was never married, built a mansion in Detroit to house his art collection. His father was Jacob Roosa Freer and his mother was Phoebe Freer. His mother died when he was 14 yrs old. Charles was originally from Kingston, NY. He had 6 siblings.
