I will be flying for the first time....leaving Dallas for Washington DC......on American airlines......what are some basic items that are not allowed on the plane? Laptop? Cell phones? Rx's? How many hours should we get there before departure?

You can take your cellphone, your prescriptions and your laptop. I'd recommend getting to the airport two hours before departure to ensure a stress-free expirence! πŸ™‚βœˆοΈπŸ’ΊπŸ›©οΈπŸ›«πŸ›¬

Everything you listed is allowed. Liquids, like bottled water is not. Take medications and personal items you require if you luggage is misdirected or lost. You will not be allowed to use a laptop until after take off. To be sure, about two hours before scheduled departure. But it really depends on how busy is the airport. It can take some time to get through TSA screening.
