If it's an international flight you'll always have to go through immigration and customs. If it's not an international flight you'll never have to go through immigrations or customs. Just passport control.
First off - you didn't state whether you're coming in on an international or not. That would be helpful information. If yes, to international, you must always clear us customs and immigration at your first point of entry into the US.

i dont think there is custom check on local flights... just regular TSA security check so you should be fine.
